Goldenseal and Autism

Are you thinking about giving your child with Autism Goldenseal?

For years, Goldenseal has been used in those with autism as an antimicrobial and antibacterial, and anti-yeast herbal remedy.

Have you come across this herb in doing your research? What is it really used for?

In this post and video, I will show you the published scientific research on Goldenseal and autism. We will also go over what it’s specifically used for. Let me get my slides so you can see what I’m talking about.

Goldenseal

It’s a perennial plant that grows in the northeastern US and Canada.

Its roots contain berberine and hydrastine, as well as other molecules in the extract itself.

Goldenseal Uses

Historically, Goldenseal roots were used by many civilizations for the care of many, many different illnesses. Goldenseal extract has been shown to inhibit the growth of various infections that can contribute to gut dysbiosis. The therapeutic effects are anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory. You can read the list there neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and gastrointestinal protective. So there’s definitely a lot of great stuff about Goldenseal.

And Goldenseal is used for more than just candida. So many people learn that Goldenseal extract is potent against candida. Yes. However, it has an impact that’s greater than just candida. Think of plants needing to be healthy and protected. Right? The extract is from the actual roots of the plant. So would nature make molecules that would only target one thing? No, there would be a wide usage of any of the molecules that that plant created so that it could be healthy and protected.

However, there is a warning when it comes to Goldenseal.

There are a few studies that have also suggested the possible side effects of it being neurotoxic, hepatotoxic, and phototoxic.

Please make sure to work with a knowledgeable healthcare provider if using Goldenseal. There are some healthcare providers that will not use Goldenseal because they feel it might be too strong and have the potential for negative side effects.

So you really want to work with a knowledgeable healthcare provider.

Goldenseal extract and autism

Okay, what does the research show?

There are no specific research articles, research studies, or clinical trials – there’s nothing like that on goldenseal extract and its impact on autism symptoms. There’s certainly research in other therapeutic areas, but not in autism.

Symptoms Targeted

It is best to work with a knowledgeable doctor to run labs and monitor progress regardless of the prescription or supplement used. So the symptoms that Goldenseal targets have to do with gut dysbiosis, but you really want to run the labs so that you can quantify your progress. You’ll save time and money using science to answer the question does my child with autism have gut dysbiosis?

You don’t just want to answer that question doing trial and error and not really quantifying what the actual gut dysbiosis is. You want to have that quantified first. Then you can match up the proper supplement or prescription. Whatever the need is, you’ll at least be driven by science.

Conclusions

There are many uses for Goldenseal extract. However, it is a very powerful supplement and should only be used with guidance from a knowledgeable healthcare provider.
