Hi I’m Theresa Lyons, MS, MS, PhD and I work with parents whose children have autism. I’m a Yale University trained scientist, medical strategist, and autism parent. I knew something was wrong with my daughter. I just had this intuition. This knowing. That things just weren’t going right. My daughter was developing but there was just something not right. I had a nagging feeling and everyone kept telling me to ignore it and that everything’s fine but I ignored myself and that’s what I get really mad about.
We got the autism diagnosis and it was devastating. I was upset for my daughter. But I was really upset at myself because I didn’t listen to myself. We started going from doctor to doctor to try to see how she could get healthier but those doctors would just say “Ooh that’s just autism.” And it was like we were back before the diagnosis when I said something was wrong and people told me not to worry. I was determined not to make that mistake again!
So, I came up to speed on the autism research literature, put together a top-notch healthcare team that included a Functional Medicine specialist, and listened to my intuition. My daughter is thriving, and we are having so much family fun. We are doing the things I dreamed about.
Since then, doctors started asking me to teach other parents what I know about autism and that lead to this website, my book, and working one-on-one with parents in over 18 countries. I teach parents the cutting-edge science of autism research so that they can make the best decisions for their child. Plus then they can have the extraordinary family fun they always wanted with their children.
You are right even when experts say you’re not.
You know your child best. You spend the most time with them. Their autism might have you doubting your parenting skills. At times it can be overwhelming and difficult to parent but you are not a failure. Doctors, teachers, and therapists all have their own opinions. They do their best but there are times when they are wrong and you are right. Stay strong in your advocating for your child.
Just because a test result came back ok doesn’t mean nothing is wrong.
You know something is wrong, and you finally get a doctor to run a test, but the result comes back normal, and you’re told that “everything is fine”. This is the time to start working with a Functional Medicine practitioner. Autism is so complex, and frequently, it affects the body as a whole. Unless they’re specially trained in how the body’s systems relate to and affect one another, many doctors don’t know exactly what to look for. Rather than simple blood tests, a Functional Medicine doctor would likely test things like stool and urine, look for environmental toxins, nutrient deficiencies, and inflammation, and consider genetics just to start with.
There is so much more to teaching than ABA.
ABA, at times, can seem so harsh and limiting. It’s great for some things but not everything. Sometimes, it can seem to cause more problems than it solves. If you’ve ever wanted to do fun activities with your child, ABA is not the best way. There are other ways to more naturally teach your child to ask meaningful questions, enjoy playing with their peers, and become motivated to participate in family activities like baking, cooking, shopping, etc.
When was the last time you smiled? When was the last time you laughed, really laughed?
Does it feel like autism is slowly draining all the joy and fun out of your life?
I’m here to tell you that you can get your life back. You can smile again. Laugh again. Have date nights. Go out with friends. Give more attention to your other children. Or have more children, if you want. Get back to going to family and friend’s parties. Focus on your career or go back to school. Whatever makes you happy.
Your life after the autism diagnosis can be even more amazing than before it.
Most doctors say that autism is a lifelong diagnosis. But the truth, scientific truth, is it’s not. Your child can heal completely from autism. Listen to your intuition. You know your child’s quality of life should be better.
You know your child is not living up to their potential.
You see other children getting better. It’s possible for them, and you might hope for change, but you might be scared to really believe. I’m here to tell you it’s possible for your child, too.
There are a lot of things involved in healing autism. Let me help you take an important step.
Working with a doctor who will look for the root cause of your child’s symptoms is vital. Experts like this can sometimes be hard to find, but I’ve made it easy for you.
