You’ve likely heard all the buzz lately about healing autism. I understand that you might have some resistance to healing autism because for so many years it’s been talked about as a permanent condition. Almost as if with autism “you’ve boarded a train and there’s no getting off.”
That’s what happens with new information…thinking changes…new possibilities open up…a new day has dawned in autism. You might be thinking “Why haven’t I seen this before?” and that’s because the research is new…only a few years old. With science and medicine it often takes 30 years for this new information to trickle down into the doctor’s office that you take your child to. This is just historically how the medical field evolved however this has all changed with the internet and social media. Quality information can spread fast and as autism parents that’s exactly what we want since every moment that passes is a moment that we can’t get back for our child’s life.
I recently asked Dr. Mark Hyman, 11 time #1 New York Times bestselling author and functional medicine pioneer, “After a parent hears the words, “your child has autism,” what do you wish was said immediately after that?” Listen to what he says he hopes you don’t do.
I know what you might be thinking…”That’s only one doctor. I want more evidence.” I totally understand your need for more information. In 2016, researchers published a paper that summarized the finding from following 207 kids diagnosed with ASD at age two and found that 9% showed “optimal progress” at age 4…meaning that at age 4 those children healed completely meaning they no longer qualified for an autism diagnosis. Here’s the first sentence of that article “Although for many children, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong disability, a subset of children with ASD lose their diagnosis and show typical cognitive and adaptive abilities.”
So now you might be sitting there staring at the screen wondering “How do I find out which group my child is in?”
You take action. There is a lot of new research in autism. I’ve written many Huffington Post articles on the science of healing autism but here are a few noteworthy ones. The gut microbiome can influence autism. Research has shown that a single strain of probiotics (easily purchasable I might add) rectifies autistic-like social deficits in a mouse model. There are certain types of bacteria in the human gut that are associated with higher cognition in infants. Said another way…certain bacteria are associated with better cognition…in all 5 areas of cognition measured in typically developing children. So yes, gut health is important for your child…autism or not.
Many years ago autism was a mystery but severe autism was like something to shove deep within a closet. Behaviors of those with severe autism are heartbreaking to watch. I know this because my daughter used to be profoundly autistic. Watching her behaviors at times used to feel like dying a death of a thousand daggers. Any parent whose child bangs their head knows exactly what I’m talking about. Thankfully even knowledge about severe autism has changed recently. Manganese, zinc, and lead levels, pre and postnatally, are now linked with autism. Higher levels of lead in early childhood are associated with increasing severity of autism. Manganese, a controversial essential elemental nutrient, levels in early childhood was inversely associated with higher ADOS-2 and SRS-2 scores…meaning the lower the manganese levels the more severe the autism. Severe autism is not such a mystery anymore...nor does your child have to have those symptoms for the rest of their lives.
Yes, there is a lot of new scientific studies that are being published. Then entire paradigm of autism is changing entirely. When parents work more closely with me, I make navigating all this information and decisions easier for them. I know what’s it’s like to stare into the abyss of your child’s future......and see nothing. I also know what it’s like to take action and change that future into something bright.

The food your child is eating can affect their development. That’s a well-accepted scientific fact…that’s why your doctor always asks you what your child is eating. Special diets are the quickest and most efficient way to repair the enteric nervous system, digestion, the gut microbiota, and so much more.
