This information is for those who have already implemented a special diet. The herb I will teach about has a very specific mechanism of action that helps counter neuroinflammation. If your child is still eating foods that CAUSE inflammation it will be difficult to measure any true results.
Centella asiatica (CA) is a very important medicinal herb. Commonly known as mandukparni or Indian pennywort or jalbrahmi, it has been used as a medicine in the Ayurvedic tradition of India for thousands of years and listed in the historic ‘Sushruta Samhita’, an ancient Indian medical text. In China it’s known as gotu kola and is one of the reported “miracle elixirs of life” known over 2000 years ago. Indications of Need Used for:
for memory enhancement, increase attention span
treating high blood pressure
emotional disorders, such as depression
Also widely used for wound healing. In Ayurveda, CA is one of the main herbs for revitalizing the nerves and brain cells.
They make up cell membranes.1 Have a hydrophillic head, hydrophobic tail. Phospholipases A2 (PLA2) are lipid mediators…fats…They break certain chemical bonds to result in free fatty acids. PLA2 normally removes oxidized and damaged phospholipids...that's a good thing. However, at times of increased PLA2 activity then the excess free fatty acids can be metabolized into substances that cause neuroinflammation and propagation of neuronal injury.2 So what influences the activity of PLA2? Good question. The activity of PLA2 can be influenced by dopamine, glutamate, serotonin, and cytokines...all of which are known to not be optimal in most with autism. A healthy gut is vital for these to optimize, which is why CA should not be used unless a special diet has been implemented. Let's take the neurotransmitter, glutamate, that is known in many with autism to be in excess and see how PLA2 gets involved. Overstimulation of glutamate receptors activates the NADPHoxidase -> activation of PLA2 -> overgeneration of arachidonic acid and metabolism -> neuroinflammation in neurological disorders.
Tip: It's important that the issue your child might be having is targeted by the herb you want to use. Dysregulated phospholipid metabolism has been proposed as a component of autism. And CA's mechanism of action targets phospholipid metabolism. We can go a little deeper and look at genomic information. There is a enzyme involved that is encoded by the PAFAH1B1 gene. That gene is implicated with high-risk autism genes so there is evidence linking both phenotype and genotype information. Pharmaceutical companies are actively developing drugs to target PLA2 in a variety of therapeutic areas but no clinical trials have been done in autism yet.
